Claim: Sadio Mane spends 2025 vacation playing on sandy pitch in Senegal

Source: Micky Jnr (Facebook, X)

Verdict: False

Researched by Alfa Shaban

African footballers during their off-season are often spotted spending their vacations either at popular holiday destinations around the world or returning home to give back to their countries and communities.

Senegal international, Sadio Mane, who plays with Al-Nassr Football Club, in Saudi Arabia, is one player that publicly travels back to his native village of Bambali, in Senegal’s Casamance Region, to mostly contribute to the growth of the community.

On July 5, 2025, an image was circulated by Micky Jnr, an African football journalist with over 516,000 followers on Facebook, claiming Mane was spending his current holidays in Senegal.

The image showed Mane playing football in a setting that looked like the countryside in an all-blue jersey and attempting to evade an oncoming goalkeeper on a soggy sandy pitch.

The journalist captioned the image: “Sadio Mané is enjoying his vacation at home.” At the time of filing this report, the post had attracted over 3,600 reactions, 99 comments, and three shares. Micky posted the same content (image and caption) on his X account.

The image gained further reach with GhanaWeb publishing a story of Mane’s supposed return to Senegal, citing Micky’s post.

This report will verify whether the image is recent.

Fact-check

GhanaFact used two separate search functions to verify the image in terms of when it first appeared on the internet.

First, the team used Google reverse image search, which helped confirmed that the image was first posted online in 2022 on the website of a French-language sports magazine, Presse Sports L’Equipe.

A translation of the French caption to the particular image, as uploaded on the site, read in part: “Sadio Mané, during a gala match shortened by the rain in Casamance, in honor of his visit to his home village. Bambali, Casamance, Senegal; June 14, 2022.”

In 2022, a Mane-inspired Senegal national team won the country’s first African Cup of Nations (AFCON), and on transfer from English Premier League side Liverpool to the German side, Bayern Munich to cap a momentous season for club and country.

These facts about Mane were captured in the other part of the caption that read: “After his great season with Senegal and Liverpool, and before joining Bayern Munich, Sadio Mané returned to his home village of Bambali, in Casamance. The striker had the African Cup with him. Pride and emotions were on the agenda for these few days with the icon of an entire country.”

Another layer of verification is using keyword search on X with: “Sadio Mané vacation.”

We found similar posts about his vacation posted between June 15 and 16, 2022, showing Mane in the same jersey and footwear playing on the sandy pitch. (here, here, here, here, here.) We also found an Instagram post on Mane’s official handle about the game in June 2022.

GhanaFact reached out to Micky Jnr via Facebook Messenger to draw his attention to the misinformation contained in his post. He has yet to respond to us.

Verdict

The claim that Sadio Mane was captured playing football on a sandy pitch during his recent vacation is False. The image is from 2022, not 2025.
