The Electoral Commission (EC) today (July 11) is holding a rerun of parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma-North Constituency located in the Greater Accra Region. The vote comes seven months after Ghana’s 2024 general elections.
The rerun was announced by the EC on July 2, 2025, following months of an impasse over which candidate won the Ablekuma North seat during the 2024 elections.
The lack of declaration has denied the constituency of a representative in Parliament, as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) disagreed over scanned pink sheets of results from identified polling stations.
“The Commission arrived at the decision to rerun the election in the underlisted polling stations because the 19 scanned polling station results used for collation, though approved by agents of both political parties, were not verified by the presiding officers responsible for those polling stations,” the EC said in its announcement on July 2, 2025.

The 2024 election chaos and what led to the impasse
On December 7, 2024, Ghana held general elections that saw constituents of Ablekuma-North vote for their preferred candidates. But, chaos by supporters of the NPP and NDC led to the destruction of pink sheets, which had the results of the candidates who were voted for.
The EC, by mandate, called for the collation of results six times but postponed the exercise due to unresolved misunderstandings and chaos at the centres.
In the July 2 statement, the Electoral Commission confirmed that 37 pink sheets were destroyed when party supporters besieged their collation centres during the collation of results for the 2024 elections.
“The NDC held the view that the election should be rerun in 37 polling stations because scanned pink sheets from 37 polling stations, which were used to collate the results, were provided by the NPP. The NPP was of the view that the results from 3 outstanding polling stations, be collated and a winner declared, since the NDC agents had verified and confirmed the scanned polling station results they presented,” the EC said about the party positions on the matter.
Legal battles to have the EC declare a winner
On January 4, 2025, an Accra High Court directed the EC to complete the collation process for some four constituencies (including Ablekuma North) by January 6, 2025. With this directive, the EC on January 5, 2025, successfully declared winners from three pending constituencies except for the Ablekuma North Constituency.
This marked the 5th time the Electoral Commission (EC) had to temporarily suspend the collation process for the constituency due to the continued inability to verify some pink sheets (election results forms) submitted by the NPP and the objection from the NDC to use scanned documents.
The Commission again tried to collate election results on January 17, 2025. But they failed to do so due to insecurity and the Ghana Police Service’s inability to protect its staff at the collation centre at its Old Head Office.
GhanaFact, during this time, observed that disinformation actors started sharing narratives to suggest that the EC declared a winner for the Ablekuma North seat. We found posts that claimed either candidates of the NPP or the NDC had been declared winners (see our report here).
Following the July 2 announcement by the EC to rerun elections in the constituency, the NPP initially intended not to participate and filed an interlocutory injunction application at the High Court to halt the rerun.
However, the court dismissed the application on July 9, paving the way for today’s election.
