A video making the rounds on social media platforms suggests that Kwame Baffoe Abronye DC, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has chastised the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, over a recent back-and-forth with Sammy Gyamfi, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).
The exchanges relate to claims by the Minority that an IMF report has reported losses of 1.7 billion dollars due to GoldBod operations. The GoldBod maintains the losses are that of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and not theirs because their 2025 audited reports showed a surplus.
In the video bearing the logo of Abronye’s Ohia TV, the regional chairman is heard saying: “So far as I have seen that it is not GoldBod, and all the documents and the communication I have read shows that the losses are from Bank of Ghana and not Sammy Gyamfi.
“As for the losses, gold reserves are a commodity, a direct commodity under the Bank of Ghana, so if the Bank of Ghana has sold gold at a loss, it is their loss, it is not Sammy Gyamfi. It is certainly not Sammy Gyamfi, I won’t buy that,” he added.
The video has been shared by accounts on X (here, here, here) and Facebook (here, here, here)
“So Abronye, who is not a lawyer, can read and understand it, but Afenyo-Markin, who is a lawyer, cannot?” one poster on Facebook wrote. “Abronye DC has finally disagreed with Afenyo-Markin over the Bank of Ghana and GoldBod’s reported $1.7 billion loss,” another on X stated.
Was Abronye addressing the Minority Leader in the video?
Fact-check?
GhanaFact traced the original video of Abronye to January 5, 2026 broadcast on Ohia TV’s YouTube page in a broadcast focussed on GoldBod issues citing an International Monetary Fund (IMF) report released in December 2025.
In his submission, Abronye traces the reason Ghana turned to the IMF under the Akufo-Addo administration and the benefits that have accrued to the current government, he specifically refers to the 133-page report and what it said about losses of 214 million dollars to gold trade.
The snippet being recirculated is found at the 26:54 seconds mark of part two of The Evidence show titled: “The IMF and GoldBod saga” that aired on Ohia TV’s YouTube page and other social media pages.

- While Afenyo-Markin’s critique of GoldBod is based on an August 2026 IMF report, Abronye was speaking with respect to a December 2025 IMF report.
- Abronye’s The Evidence Show last aired in April 2026, so he couldn’t be responding to the Minority Leader
The December 2025 IMF report
Under the POLICY DISCUSSIONS section of the report titled: Fifth Review Under the Extended Credit Facility Arrangement and Financing Assurances Review, the IMF highlighted a loss from “the artisanal and small-scale (ASM) doré gold transactions component of G4R (Gold for Reserves)” which it said had “reached US$214 million (0.2 percent of GDP), mostly on trading losses but also on GoldBod off-takers’ fees.”
The Minority at the time widely criticised the loss and called for a bipartisan committee to probe the loss.

Verdict:
The claim that Abronye DC was responding to the Minority Leader is False.
