Verdict: False

Following Air Ghana’s launch of its third cargo carrier at the Accra International Airport (AIA) on May 5, 2026, multiple social media posts suggested that Air Ghana was a new national airline years after the collapse of Ghana Airways.
The posts included videos and images of an Air Ghana’s Boeing 737-400 freighter arriving at the airport with captions implying the Ghana’s national airline had been revived by the current administration.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Malik Basintale on Facebook claimed: “Our “Ghana Airways” was collapsed and turned into a Chop bar and named “La Tante DC 10” by Yaanom. Thank God “Air Ghana” is back after many years. God bless the reign of H.E John Dramani Mahama. Your leadership is resurrecting things again Sir.”

On X, a user also shared the images with the caption: “Breaking news: President Mahama has revived Ghana Airways! Air Ghana’s Boeing 737-400 freighter touched down in Ghana in the early hours of today.”

Similar captions were shared across various social media platforms (here, here, here).
But is Air Ghana a new national airline, or the replacement for Ghana Airways?
Fact-check
Air Ghana is a Ghanaian air freight operator with more than 30 years of aviation experience, and it operates cargo and logistics services. According to its website, the company was founded by the late Marwan Traboulsi. “In 1993, he founded Air Ghana as an air logistics company that would become one of the most enduring pillars of Ghana’s trade infrastructure,” the company’s website stated.
The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) said about the company: Air Ghana is already one of six cargo operators at the Accra International Airport and the launch of its third cargo carrier is “expected to strengthen trade and logistics across West Africa.”

Unlike Ghana Airways, which was a government-owned national airline that collapsed in 2004, Air Ghana is a privately owned cargo airline focused on freight not passenger services.
GhanaFact further checked records of the Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC) and confirmed that Air Ghana is an already registered company operating in Ghana.

From the above, claims that Ghana has launched a new ‘national airline’ is False. The current government has, however, initiated steps to restart a national airline. As recently as April 2026, the Government of Ghana said it was set to publish a Request for Expression of Interest (RfEOI) in May 2026 for the establishment of the new national airline.
Verdict
Therefore, the claim is False. Air Ghana is not a new national airline or “revived” Ghana Airways.
