Claim: ‘I have produced over 1,000 MPs’
Source: John Boadu, NPP chairman
Verdict: Exaggeration

The National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, claims he has produced over 1,000 MPs while serving in national executive roles for the party.
Speaking on the Lawson TV programme, which aired on October 19, 2026, the former NPP General Secretary, while discussing the party’s reorganisation efforts after the recent election of national officers, said: “With all humility, I have produced over 1,000 MPs. Yet there is no MP whose car I have ever sat in. What personal gain do I stand to get?”
Lawson TV shared Boadu’s comments on its X and Facebook pages. We also found a GhanaWeb publication citing the interview. Commenters on the site questioned the plausibility of Boadu’s claim.
One commenter said: “The total number of NPP candidates that have been in Parliament from 1993 to date is less than 820; some of these MPs have been in Parliament for more than one term, so how did John Boadu produce 1000 MPs? Is this another METAPHOR?”
Another questioned: “How many MPs has the NPP had since 1992 to talk about you producing over 1000 MPs?”

When GhanaFact reached out to John Boadu over the claim, social media captions and media reportage, he responded to us via WhatsApp: “The issue is not about the numbers unless you want to take it out of context, my point was that, through my hands a lot of people have become MPs.”
This report will verify the NPP’s MP records since 1996 as compared to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC). We would also compute how many MPs the NPP produced during John Boadu’s tenure as National Organizer and later General Secretary.
The Facts
GhanaFact compiled the total number of MPs the NPP has produced under the Fourth Republic. Despite the 2024 election being the ninth general election cycle since 1992, the NPP has fully participated in eight parliamentary elections, having boycotted the 1992 parliamentary polls.
GhanaFact relied on TV3’s Election Command Centre portal, which disaggregated data for parliamentary and presidential election outcomes from 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024.
According to their data, the NPP as a party has produced a total of 912 MPs over eight election cycles. Therefore, John Boadu cannot claim to have produced 1,000 MPs when the party’s total count is a little over 900.
| Year (total available seats) | NPP seats | NDC seats |
| 1992 (200) | 0 | 189 |
| 1996 (200) | 60 | 134 |
| 2000 (200) | 102 | 91 |
| 2004 (230) | 128 | 94 |
| 2008 (230) | 107 | 101 |
| 2012 (275) | 121 | 150 |
| 2016 (275) | 169 | 106 |
| 2020 (275) | 137 | 137 |
| 2024 (275) | 88 | 185 |
| Total | 912 | 1,187 |

Here are key facts from the data above:
- Before his recent election as national chairman, John Boadu was a national executive (organizer, general secretary) from 2014 until he lost in 2022.
- He therefore served as national executive across two elections – 2016 and 2020.
- The NPP won 169 and 137 seats in the two elections, respectively. In total, the NPP produced 306 MPs while John Boadu was a national executive.

Verdict
If even the NPP has not produced 1000 MPs since 1996, Chairman Boadu’s claim is an exaggeration!
