Claims: Mahama lost votes in Greater Accra in 2024, NDC only added 30,000 votes in the Ashanti Region and others

Source: Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Verdict: Mixed

Researched by Samuel Nii Adjetey

A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has claimed the party’s performance in the 2020 and 2024 presidential elections shows shifts in voter turnout in the Ashanti and Greater Accra Regions.

“We had about 1.7 million new voters (in the 2024 register). Out of that number, a significant percentage came from the Ashanti Region. But despite that, the NDC, which had about 33% of Ashanti votes, they only added 30,000 to the votes they had in 2020.

He made the statement while addressing members of the NPP’s United Kingdom (UK), Birmingham Chapter on October 4, 2025, comparing the party’s results with those of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in both regions.

“Does that tell you that Ashantis have abandoned NPP for NDC? In Greater Accra, that our votes shrunk, the margin was about 700,000; John Mahama’s vote was lower than in 2020,” he said.

This fact-check will verify the following:

  1. Did the NDC get about 33% of the total votes in the Ashanti Region in the 2024 Presidential elections?
  2. Did the NDC only add about 30,000 votes to what they had in 2020 in the Ashanti Region?
  3. Was the margin between NPP and NDC votes in Greater Accra about 700,000?
  4. Were John Mahama’s (NDC) votes in Greater Accra in 2024 lower than in 2020?

Fact-check

To verify the claims, GhanaFact analysed the Electoral Commission’s  (EC) data on the 2020 and 2024 Presidential elections for the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions. According to data from the EC, both the NPP and the NDC recorded shifts in voter support between the two election cycles in the respective regions.

In the Ashanti Region, the NPP’s votes dropped from 1,795,824 in 2020 to 1,366,800 in 2024, while the NDC’s votes increased slightly from 653,149 to 697,076.

In the Greater Accra Region, the NPP’s votes fell sharply from 1,253,179 to 681,535, whereas the NDC’s votes declined moderately from 1,326,489 to 1,260,832.

Generally, the data shows a reduction in NPP votes in both regions, with the NDC making minor gains in Ashanti but losing some support in Greater Accra.

Fact-check 1. Did the NDC get about 33% of the total votes in the Ashanti Region in the 2024?

According to official data from the Electoral Commission (EC), the National Democratic Congress (NDC) obtained 697,076 votes out of a total of 2,106,109 votes cast in the Ashanti Region during the 2024 presidential elections.

The number represents approximately 33.1% of the total votes. This confirms the claim that the NDC secured about 33% of the votes in the region.

Verdict

The claim that the NDC had about 33% of the votes for the 2024 Presidential elections 2024 is true. We have previously fact-checked this claim; you can find the report here.

Fact-check 2. Did the NDC only add about 30,000 votes to what they had in 2020 in the Ashanti Region?

According to official data from the EC, the NDC secured 653,149 votes in the Ashanti Region during the 2020 presidential elections and 697,076 votes in 2024. This shows an increase of 43,927 votes between the two elections, a figure higher than the 30,000 claimed.

Verdict

The claim that the NDC got about 30,000 votes more in 2024 than they had in 2020 in the Ashanti Region is false.

Fact-check 3. Was the margin between NPP and NDC votes in Greater Accra about 700,000 in 2024?

According to data from the EC, in the Greater Accra Region, the NPP obtained 681,535 votes while the NDC secured 1,260,832 votes in the 2024 presidential elections. The difference between the two parties’ votes was 579,297, not 700,000 as claimed.

Verdict

The claim that the margin between NPP and NDC votes in Greater Accra was about 700,000 is false.

Fact-check 4. Were John Mahama’s (NDC) votes in Greater Accra in 2024 lower than in 2020?

According to data from the EC, John Mahama, representing the NDC, obtained 1,326,489 votes in the Greater Accra Region during the 2020 presidential elections and 1,260,832 votes in 2024. This represents a decrease of 65,657 votes between the two elections.

Verdict

The claim that John Mahama’s (NDC) votes in Greater Accra in 2024 were lower than in 2020 is true.

Conclusion

In total, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko made four verifiable claims about the NPP and NDC’s performance in the 2020 and 2024 elections. Two claims, that the NDC secured about 33% of the votes in the Ashanti Region and that John Mahama’s 2024 votes in Greater Accra were lower than in 2020 were true.

However, two others that said the NDC only added about 30,000 votes in Ashanti between 2020 and 2024 and a claim about the margin between NPP and NDC votes in Greater Accra were false.
