Claim: The Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyabeng has responded to the High Court’s decision on prosecutorial powers

Source: X

Verdict: Misleading

Researched by Gifty Danso

An X user, CASTINBILLZ, on April 16, 2026 shared a 14-second video from local media outlet, United Television (UTV), suggesting that the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, had responded to a High Court decision on his prosecutorial powers.

On April 15, 2026, the Accra High Court General Jurisdiction 10 ruled that the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) does not have independent authority to prosecute criminal cases, directing that all matters initiated by the anti-corruption body be transferred to the Attorney-General.

The post, captioned: “The OSP, Kissi Agyabeng has responded to the high court’s decision,” was made on the back of the ruling by the High Court regarding the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s prosecutorial powers.

In the video, Mr Kissi Agyebeng can be heard saying: “Those who do not understand Twi, please forgive me. Right now I’m a solitary bird. I have sacrificed my soul to do my best. When my time is up, I will go.”

This fact-check will verify the claim that the SP had responded to the ruling in that video.

Fact-check

GhanaFact used the InVID verification tool to break down the video into key frames and, with the help of Google Reverse Image search, found that the video was from 2023, when Mr Kissi Agyebeng held a press conference on November 29, highlighting the challenges he was facing in office.

We also traced the full UTV Ghana post on X, where they shared a video that was three minutes and six seconds long. The recirculated snippet is found at the 02:53 second mark to the end of the video.

However, in light of the recent high court decision, the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, has not held any press conference, except for a press release from the office on April 15, 2026. In that release, the OSP explained the implication of the ruling in a particular case while stating that it was taking necessary steps to challenge the ruling.

Verdict

The video showing the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, purportedly reacting to the recent High Court ruling is old and is, therefore, misleading.
