Viral social media posts claimed that a former flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, has broken away from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) after losing the 2026 presidential primary.
The claim started circulating on X and Facebook, (see here, here, and here) after the January 31 primary which was won by former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.

This fact-check will verify the claim.
Fact-check
In an address to supporters shortly after provisional results showed he was trailing Dr. Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong thanked his supporters for their hard work and urged them not to allow disappointment to turn into bitterness or division.
“I know most of you are dejected. You have to keep your spirit up, because once we have life, we have everything. So don’t be dejected,” he said, adding: “Do not use this against anybody in the party… Let’s all come together as party members and work together.”
Following the declaration of the results, Kennedy Agyapong accepted defeat and again rallied his supporters and the wider NPP family in his concession speech at the party headquarters: “In elections you can win and you can lose. So if you lose you have to accept it in good faith. So let all of us throw our support to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer. And all I say is NPP we need unity in the party, but unity comes with respect. We have to respect each other’s views,” the former Assin Central lawmaker added.
Amid the reports of his exit from the NPP, senior members of Agyapong’s campaign publicly debunked the claims.
Former Western North Regional Minister and Director of Elections for the Kennedy Agyapong campaign, Joojo Rocky Obeng on February 13, 2026 wrote on his Facebook page that, although the defeat was painful, breaking away from the NPP is not an option for the team. “…Defeat is painful but a breakaway “Third Force” is NOT AN OPTION,” his post partly said.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii sen programme on February 16, 2026, spokesperson for the Kennedy Agyapong campaign, Kwasi Kwarteng, debunked the claim, indicating that Ken has no plans of exiting the party.
“Kennedy Agyapong will never break away from the NPP; he has never dreamed of leaving the party or forming another one. He is a loyal NPP man and will stand by the party any day,” Kwarteng said.
In a separate interview on Kessben FM, Campaign Coordinator for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, on February 23, 2026, dismissed claims that Kennedy Agyapong had broken away from the NPP. “I know for a fact that it will not occur to Kennedy Agyapong to leave the NPP,” he said.
The BASE bus and press conference
GhanaFact noted that a post shared by X user @_sneakernyame with a caption that Ken had broken away had a video that captured a Kennedy Agyapong-branded bus with the inscription “The BASE.”

Even though the post suggested that the bus was for his campaigns after breaking away, GhanaFact found that the The BASE-branded buses were deployed a day before the primary to convey delegates to the various polling stations.

Another video posted on Facebook with an inscription “Kennedy Agyapong breaks away from the NPP to form the third force, the Base party,” captured a group of people announcing the formation of The Base as a third-force to the governing National Democratic Congress and the NPP.
Contrary to what the inscription suggested, nowhere in the entire clip was Kennedy Agyapong mentioned as having links to the group. The inscription was therefore false.
In an interview on Kessben TV on March 2, 2026 fundraising chairman of the Ken Campaign, George Oti Bonsu said he was a core part of the formation of “The BASE,” a group of citizens who share in the vision of Kennedy Agyapong adding that, Ken is not behind the formation of group nor does he have any direct or indirect links to the group.
“Kennedy Agyapong did not tell us to form The BASE. It was those of us who are on the ground and see how Ghanaians are concerned about the current issues in the country who formed The BASE,” he said.
Based on the above, the claim that Kennedy Agyapong has broken away from the NPP is inaccurate.
Verdict
The claim is therefore rated False!
