The official Government of Ghana email service (.gov.gh) went down early this week, the state-funded National Information Technology Agency (NITA) confirmed to local news outlets.
.gov.gh is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for government of Ghana websites. The domain extension is reserved for official government websites, indicating that the particular site is owned by or affiliated to the government.
When disruption was detected
A myjoyonline.com news report on August 26, 2025, said the .gov.gh email service went offline around 5:00 a.m. on August 25, 2025, and has remained inaccessible.
NITA indicated that it was working with its technical partner, eSolutions, to restore the service, but failed to give a timeline.
NITA CEO speaks
NITA’s Chief Executive Officer, Mark-Oliver Kevor, told myjoyonline.com that the disruption was due to a “technical challenge” and that engineers were working to resolve it.
“There has been a technical challenge which we are addressing with our technology partners,” he said. Unable to give a timeline of when the issue would be resolved, he said: “… joint technical teams are working on it.”
Concerns raised
Aside from the government staff whose emails have been impacted, security analysts have also expressed concerns about what this means for the digital infrastructure of the country.
This outage means that Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) that fully or partially use the .gov.gh service will be hamstrung in terms of service delivery relative to tasks that require access to their official emails.
On social media, the general sentiment is about the possibility of a cyberattack, given the sensitive nature of government communications.
NITA statement
On Wednesday, August 27, the National Information Technology Agency issued a statement that read in part: “We wish to inform the public, especially users of the Government of Ghana Email Platform, that service is currently experiencing a temporary outage.
“Our technical team has identified the issue and is working diligently to restore full functionality as quickly as possible. We understand the importance of this platform in supporting government communication and public service delivery, and we sincerely regret any inconvenience this disruption may cause,” the statement signed by CEO Mark Oliver Kevor said.

A disruption during National ICT week
This disruption occurred during the celebration of the National ICT week, which began from August 25 to 28, 2025.
The main event marking the celebration under the theme: “Ghana as Africa’s Digital Trade Hub: innovation, policy and partnerships for the future” is taking place at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).

Cyber disruption of an official government outlet
The X handle of President John Dramani Mahama was compromised in March this year for almost three days, with the hackers promoting a cryptocurrency platform.
The Cybersecurity Authority (CSA) confirmed the hack after two days, before the account was retrieved and the unsanctioned posts taken down.
