False! EC has not declared the results for Ablekuma North constituency

Background

On December 9, 2024, the Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensah, after declaring John Mahama as President highlighted results from nine constituencies which were being contested.

Upon several re-collation of results amid lawsuits, the EC declared 5 out of the 9 constituencies with Tema Central, Ablekuma North, Okaikwei Central, and Techiman South, still outstanding.

On January 4, 2025, an Accra High Court directed the EC to complete the collation process for the four constituencies by January 6, 2025. With this directive, the EC on January 5, successfully declared winners from three pending constituencies except for Ablekuma North.

This makes the 5th time the Electoral Commission (EC) had to temporarily suspend the collation process for the constituency due to the continued inability to verify some pink sheets (election results forms) submitted by the NPP and the objection from the NDC to use scanned documents.

Fact-check

To verify the claim of an MP-elect having been declared, GhanaFact contacted the Electoral Commission (EC) to confirm whether results for Ablekuma North Constituency had been announced.

The Deputy Chairperson of the EC, Dr. Bossman Asare denied the reports. He told GhanaFact in an interview: “We haven’t declared the results for Ablekuma North.”

This means that as of January 12, 2025, the Ablekuma North remained the only constituency yet to have an MP sworn in after the 2024 general elections.

Verdict

From the above, reports suggesting that either candidate of the  NDC or NPP were declared winners of the 2024 parliamentary race are False.
