GhanaFact, a project under FactSpace West Africa (FSWA) on October 29, 2025 undertook a digital safety outreach programme to two schools in our catchment area, educating pupils and students on how to stay safe and responsible online.
The initiative forms part of activities to mark the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s 2025 Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week, which highlights the importance of responsible media consumption and digital literacy worldwide.
During the sessions at Grace International School and Delight International School (both located at Tantra Hills in the Ga West Municipal District), participants were introduced to the basics of the internet and social media, and guided on how to develop responsible online behaviour in an increasingly digital world.
Leading the engagement, the Editor of GhanaFact, Abdur Rahman Alfa Shaban, reminded the participants that the internet, though useful, requires responsible use because it is difficult to completely erase any content once something goes online.
“Before you share a photo, video, or message, ask yourself: Is it true? Is it kind? Will I be happy if someone said or did the same thing to me? If you are angry or upset, wait until you are calm. Once something goes online, it is very hard to take back,” he told the pupils.
Other presenters included sub-editor of GhanaFact, Gifty Tracy Aminu and Samuel Nii Adjetey, head of multimedia and a researcher at GhanaFact.
GhanaFact further shared eight key online safety tips to help the children protect themselves on the internet, emphasising strong passwords, responsible posting, verifying facts, avoiding strangers, and reporting harmful behaviour.
Throughout the session, pupils were reminded that the internet is a powerful tool and that their actions determine whether it becomes helpful or harmful.
The outreach aligns with FactSpace West Africa’s ongoing commitment to promoting media literacy and equipping young people with the skills needed to navigate digital spaces safely.
