Verdict: False

Researched by Nusrat Essah

The Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has claimed the New Patriotic Party (NPP), under the eight years of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s presidency, did not construct a single factory in the Ashanti Region.

During an interview on Channel One TV’s Face to Face programme on July 8, 2025, he said: “They have been in power for 8 years, (they) never constructed a single factory in the Ashanti Region.” (9 mins: 01 secs to 9 mins: 08 secs)

This report will verify whether any factories were constructed in the Ashanti Region during the NPP administration from 2017 to 2025.

Fact-Check

GhanaFact found that the Akufo-Addo government, (2017 – 2025), under the One District, One Factory (1D1F) initiative, established the Sekyere Maize Processing Factory.

The factory’s construction started in 2020 and was commissioned for operation in 2022 in Nsuta Kwagye, Ashanti Region. According to the presidency, it was built at a cost of GH¢6.7 million.

Further investigation shows that at least four other existing factories received incentives for revamping and expansion under the 1D1F initiatives. These factories include;

  • Spring and Bolt Limited was the first factory to be incorporated into the 1D1F programme at Asokwa in the Ashanti Region in 2018. Originally established in 2013
  • Miro Forestry Ghana Limited was brought under the 1D1F programme in Drobonso, Sekyere Afram Plains in the Ashanti Region in 2019.  Meanwhile, it was originally established in 2010
  • Premium Foods Limited was integrated into the 1D1F policy in 2021 in Kwaso, Ejisu Municipality, Ashanti region but it was officially established in 1995
  • The Bodukwan Multi-Fruit Processing Factory was expanded in 2020 to Sabin Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region. It is a subsidiary of the Bodukwan Holding Company, established in 2000

Evidence shows that at least one factory (Sekyere Maize Processing Factory) was established under the 8-year term of President Akufo-Addo, which contradicts Mustapha Gbande’s claim.

Verdict

Therefore, the claim that no single factory was constructed in the Ashanti Region during the NPP’s 8 years in office is False.
