Some news reports in the early hours of March 27, 2026, suggested some members of the Black Stars squad camping in Austria ahead of an international friendly on the same day lost some items in a burglary at their hotel.
According to the reports, some players and management committee members lost an amount of $2,250 cash and two Rolex watches.
Despite no official report on the identification of the suspected burglars, a Ghanaian YouTube Channel, Amazing TV Ghana, claimed that the Hearts of Oak and Black Stars goalkeeper, Benjamin Asare, has been accused of the theft.

In the video, the presenter is heard saying, “It’s such a disgrace that the Ghana Black Stars have become famous in a foreign land. It’s about the theft incident. It is all about the World Cup preparation, where there are ongoing international friendlies which Ghana is also participating in with Austria, Germany, Mexico among others. And it is in line with this that Ghana had gone to Austria. And so far now people are dragging Ghana’s goalkeeper, Benjamin Asare for the disgraceful act that had occurred.” (0 to 58 seconds)

GhanaFact noted that official statements from Accra Hearts of Oak and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) debunked the viral claim and accusation.
A former GFA Director of Communications, Ibrahim Sannie Daara, shared a post on his X page which read, “Shameful. A YouTube channel used AI to fake an image of Benjamin Asare being “arrested” in Austria—linking him to the Ghana camp robbery. Completely false, just for clicks. Instead of analysing the heavy loss to get the #BlackStars to better for the #WorldCup, we’re destroying our own. This must stop.”
Benjamin Asare’s club, Accra Hearts of Oak, also issued a statement dismissing the report about the goalkeeper as false, misleading, and defamatory. “The management of Accra Hearts of Oak has become aware of spurious allegations circulating online concerning our goalkeeper, Benjamin Asare, who is currently with the senior national team, the Black Stars.
“We wish to categorically state that these reports are entirely false, misleading, and defamatory. The Club has engaged directly with the Ghana Football Association, and both parties confirm that there is absolutely no truth to these claims. The football club has also indicated that the case has been reported to the appropriate law enforcement agencies for investigation.
Referencing the Hearts of Oak statement in a post on X, the GFA General Secretary, Prosper Harrison Addo, added that the football association had also taken interest in the matter as has the Ghana Police.
“Note: Ghana Police Service is active. Within minutes of seeing the heartless, hurtful and malicious fake post, we engaged the Ghana Police Service. GFA and the club are on the same page. This Police pursuit is without prejudice to any legal action Mr. Benjamin Asare may also take,” his post read.
