Claim: NDC won 36% in the Ashanti Region during the 2024 presidential election

Source: Akwasi Anti Asamoah, former NPP Chairman, Fomena Constituency

Verdict: False

Researched by Nusrat Essah

A former New Patriotic Party (NPP) chairman for the Fomena Constituency, Akwasi Anti Asamoah, has claimed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) secured 36% of the votes in the Ashanti Region in the 2024 presidential election.

During a discussion on Angel FM while speaking about the arrest of the Ashanti Regional chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako also known as Wontumi, on May 28, 2025, he said:

“This man’s (Wontumi) case that came up and he was invited, but he has been dodging. Now that they are closing in on you, you are saying that NPP members should rise up. As for Wontumi’s infractions, I can even list more. Is this not the same attitude that caused the NDC to win 36% in the Ashanti Region?” (30 secs to 50 secs)

Analysis: How GH¢3.6 billion net loss by Top 10 SOEs in 2023 shot up to GH¢11 billion

This report will verify the NDC’s vote percentage in the Ashanti Region during the 2024 presidential elections.

Fact-Check

To verify this claim, GhanaFact relied on the official 2024 presidential election regional results summary sheet published by the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana.

According to the EC,

  • Total valid votes cast in the Ashanti Region was 2,106,108
  • Votes obtained by John Dramani Mahama (NDC) was  697,076
  • Votes obtained by Mahamudu Bawumia (NPP) was 1,366,800

The NDC percentage is therefore ((697,076 ÷ 2,106,108) x 100) = 33%. In percentage terms therefore, NDC got 33% of valid votes cast. Bawumia on the other hand got 64.9% of votes.

False - NDC got 33% not 36% of presidential votes in Ashanti Region in 2024 polls

This shows that President John Mahama of the NDC had 33% of the votes in the Ashanti Region, not 36% as contained in the claim by the former NPP constituency chairman.

Verdict

Therefore, the  claim that the NDC won 36% in the Ashanti Region during the 2024 elections is False.
