Circulating photo of Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie holding an ‘NDC-coloured umbrella’ is AI-generated

A purported image of CJ Paul Baffoe-Bonnie holding an NDC-coloured umbrella, was shared on Facebook recently with a caption suggesting his affiliation with the governing party. GhanaFact investigated the image using AI detection tools, Hive Moderation and Google Synthid. We found that the image was AI-generated.

A Facebook user on November 11, 2025, shared a photo of the Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, holding an umbrella with colours of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), insinuating his affiliation with the party. 

The image started circulating on the social media platform on November 10, 2025, the day of his vetting by the Appointments Committee of  Parliament. 

A day after the vetting, November 11, 2025, the image continued to circulate with a caption that read, “A special good morning to our Chief Injustice, HenDeeCee branch! 3y3 zu.” The post had gathered 645 likes, 372 comments and 14 shares on Facebook.

This fact-check will verify the authenticity of the image.

Using Google’s Reverse Image Search function, GhanaFact found that the image does not have a previous history of being online, except for November 10, 2025, when the claim began circulating. 

To verify whether or not the image was AI-manipulated, GhanaFact used Hive Moderation platform which returned a result that the image was 73.2% “likely to contain of AI-generated or deepfake content.”

GhanaFact also used Google AI detection platform, Google SynthID, and the result showed that a part of the image was created using AI, with a high confidence result from the platform.

Verdict

Therefore, the image purporting to show the Chief Justice carrying the NDC umbrella is AI-generated.
