Akua Donkor, before her sudden demise on October 28, 2024, was among the 13 presidential candidates contesting to be elected as Ghana’s next President.

A day after news broke about the passing of the flagbearer of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Akua Donkor, speculation emerged over what caused her death.

A viral flyer shared by an X account, Africa Focus, on October 29, 2024, claimed former President John Mahama was behind the sudden death. The claim was attributed to Kwabena Agyeman Appiah Kubi (aka Roman Fada), the running mate of Akua Donkor, now flagbearer of the GFP.

The flyer which has been shared on X  and garnered over 300,000 views quoted him to have said: “My boss Akua Donkor had told me of how she’s being targeted spiritually after she revealed that John Mahama killed Atta Mills, she told me that, according to her pastor, Mahama had sent her pictures to a spiritualist to eliminate her.”

This fact-check report seeks to verify the claim.

Fact-check

To verify this claim GhanaFact contacted Kwabena Agyeman Appiah Kubi, the new flagbearer of the party who dismissed the claim saying;

“I have debunked it. She never said this. The late Madam Akua Donkor has never said that. She is dead and gone and we need not tarnish her image regardless of political views. She has never said that,” he said in an interview with GhanaFact.

GhanaFact also found interviews by the GFP flagbearer with credible media outlets about Madam Akua Donkor’s death. None of the interviews captured Kwabena Agyeman Appiah Kubi to have said what was attributed to him on the viral flyer shared by Africa Focus.

This flyer is part of disinformation tactics used to mislead the public or cause public dissatisfaction for high-profile politicians, especially as Ghana’s general elections draws closer.
