Claim: Black Stars goalkeeper Richard Ofori was involved in an own goal blunder
Source: Social media
Verdict: False
Researched by Alfa Shaban
A video showing a goalkeeper scoring an own goal has been portrayed on social media, including Facebook and X, as a former Black Stars goalkeeper, Richard Ofori, who committed the blunder at his club side.
A portrait of Richard Ofori is displayed on the 23-second video, which was shared online on April 27, 2025, with the caption “FIFA should investigate RICHARD OFORI asap.”
The video shows a goalkeeper coming off his line and parrying a goal-bound shot, but the ball falls to an opponent who shoots towards the goal. A defender clears the ball off the line, but as the ball comes out, the goalkeeper, still on the ground, mistakenly kicks the ball into his net.
A voiceover under the clip, speaking in Twi, is heard saying: “Richard Ofori is into betting, because your defenders clear a goal-bound shot and you kick the ball back into your net. Are we taking him to the World Cup? This won’t help us. FIFA must launch an investigation.”
The post shared on X had been viewed 238,000 times with 363 reposts, 86 quotes, 2,451 likes, and 553 bookmarks. It has also been shared here and here.
This report will verify whether Richard Ofori was the goalkeeper captured in the video.
Fact-check
GhanaFact did a frame-by-frame analysis of the video and found that most of the stadium branding boards were in a language other than English or French.
One frame analysis showed an inscription MTBBank behind the goalkeeper’s jersey. GhanaFact investigated MTBBank and found that it was a Ukrainian bank that supports the local league.
Richard Ofori currently plays in South Africa with AmaZulu FC, whereas the keeper in the video is wearing a number 12 jersey, Richard Ofori wears the number 50 jersey with his club.
Further investigation of goalie blunders via Google Reverse Image search led us to an Instagram Post on the ole futball Instagram page that showed a different angle of the same goal with a caption that gave details of the fixture: “The Most Ridiculous Own Goal of 2025?!
“This might be the most ridiculous own goal of the year — and it happened in the Ukrainian Premier League! During the match between Obolon Kyiv and Chornomorets Odesa, Nigerian goalkeeper Chijioke Aniagboso made headlines for all the wrong reasons. In the 30th minute, Obolon came inches from scoring.
“A Chornomorets defender cleared the ball off the line… but disaster struck seconds later. Aniagboso, still on the ground, attempted to clear it — and accidentally kicked the ball straight into his own net. This unbelievable goalkeeper error is already being called one of the craziest own goals of 2025. Have you ever seen a more bizarre own goal in professional football?”
From the above, there is evidence that the match was a Ukrainian top-flight league fixture between Obolon Kyiv and Chornomorets Odesa. The goalie has been identified as a Nigerian called Chijioke Aniagboso.
Verdict
Therefore, the claim that Richard Ofori was the goalkeeper in the viral video is False.
