The former Finance Minister, Mohammed Amin Adam, has admitted an inaccuracy in his earlier statement that the erstwhile Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government never collected betting tax.
During the Minority’s address on the 2025 budget on March 13, 2025, Amin Adam clarified his position.
“I have listened to myself again, I have listened to the statement, and it appears the statement created an impression that I meant betting tax as it relates to bet winnings, was not implemented. If that was the impression that was created by my statement, then that was inaccurate on my part,” he said.
“But what I really wanted to say is that what he called betting tax as in taxes on lotto winnings was not implemented. And so I can say that explains the matter,” he explained.
On March 11, 2025, Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson presented the 2025 budget, in which he declared the end of the 10% withholding tax on betting. In reaction to this announcement, Amin Adam, who is also the Member of Parliament for Karaga, at a press conference, minutes after the budget presentation claimed the previous government never collected tax on betting, which generated public debate.
