GhanaFact, through its WhatsApp chatbot, received video clips shared on Facebook and TikTok of the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, threatening to deport Ghanaians and arrest Ghana’s former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

In the 14-second video we traced to Facebook, Donald Trump could be heard allegedly saying; “I will be deporting all the Ghanaians living in my country even if you have a Green Card. America is not your father’s house, and I will make sure Nana Akufo-Addo is arrested for destroying Ghana’s economy.”

This report will verify the authenticity of the claim.

Fact-check

Ghana Fact ran the submitted video through the InVID Verification Application’s deepfake detector. The results showed a 97% detection of strong evidence of AI manipulation.

“The algorithms of the verification plugin find very strong evidence suggesting that this video contains AI manipulated faces.”

Further checks from a team of experts from Deepfakes Rapid Response Force, an initiative of WITNESS confirmed that the video had been altered.

Witness in its response to our enquiry indicated evidence of AI manipulation in the audio, as the video dates back to a 2020 speech by Trump about the US’ response to COVID-19. It cited two reports from AFP Fact Check and Pesa Check (find here and here).

AFP Fact Check found that the clip had been altered: the original footage shows Trump addressing the public about the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. None of his executive actions have targeted Ghanaians in isolation,” AFP said in its report.

Although Meta announced in January 2025 the end of its third-party fact-checking programme on Facebook, it flagged the video indicating it was false through reviews by third-party fact-checkers. Particularly the platform cited a report from an independent fact-checking organisation, Africa Check.

Verdict

The video of Trump threatening to deport all Ghanaians and arrest ex-President Nana Akufo-Addo is altered.
