Has the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo injured a student of the University of Ghana?

A picture showing the victim who was allegedly attacked by John Dumelo is being circulated on X/ Twitter.

“Breaking News: The Young legon Student attacked by John Dumelo during the ongoing Limited registration exercise sustains serious injuries and admitted at the Emergency unit of UGMC. John Dumelo must be arrested,” an X user posted on the micro-blogging platform with the post garnering 294 comments, 126 reposts and 277 likes.

The X user further shared a video of John Dumelo in an altercation with a group of people and partly said in a post that “John Dumelo attacks a legon student during the ongoing Limited registration exercise.”

Fact-Check

Using Reverse Image Search, GhanaFact found the picture being circulated was captured in Dallas in the United States of America during a shooting incident on July 7, 2016 and our investigation identified the wounded victim as Shetamia Taylor.

According to a report by The Sun, Shetamia Taylor was shot in the calf as she attempted to shield her son during a shooting spree and the headline of the story said: “A HEROIC mum became a human shield when she risked her own life to save her son – as bullets fired into a crowd of protesters in Dallas.”

Later it was confirmed that 25-year-old, Micah Xavier Johnson, was the active shooter who targetted and killed 5 police officers and injured some bystanders which included  Shetamia Taylor.

Checks by GhanaFact show no credible media platform has published any story about the supposed attack by John Dumelo on a student of the University of Ghana and the X user has since deleted the post (here).
